Parliament, went to University College, Oxford in 1810, but in March of the

following year he and a friend, Thomas Jefferson Hogg, were both expelled

for the suspected authorship of a pamphlet entitled The Necessity of

Atheism.

In 1811 he met and eloped to Edinburgh with Harriet Westbrook and, one

year later, went with her and her older sister first to Dublin, then to Devon

and North Wales, where they stayed for six months into 1813. However, by

1814, and with the birth of two children, their marriage had collapsed and

Shelley eloped once again, this time with Mary Godwin.

Along with Mary's step-sister, the couple travelled to France, Switzerland and

Germany before returning to London where he took a house with Mary on the

edge of Great Windsor Park and wrote Alastor (1816), the poem that first

brought him fame.

In 1816 Shelley spent the summer on Lake Geneva with Byron and Mary who

had begun work on her Frankenstein. In the autumn of that year Harriet

drowned herself in the Serpentine in Hyde Park and Shelley then married

Mary and settled with her, in 1817, at Great Marlow, on the Thames. They

later travelled to Italy, where Shelley wrote the sonnet Ozymandias (written

1818) and translated Plato's Symposium from the Greek. Shelley himself

William Blake (1757-1827) English Poetry

William Blake (1757-1827)

Blake was born in London and was educated at Henry Pars Drawing School

before becoming apprentice to the engraver, James Basire (1772-79). By the

time he opened a print shop in London in 1784, he was already established

as a graphic designer and drawing tutor. When he went to live in Sussex

(1800-03), he was charged with high treason but acquitted, after which he

returned to London. After a rather unsuccessful show of his artistic work in

1809, he went into obscurity and became a mystic. A radical supporter of the

French Revolution, he was an outright critic of the social evils which he linked

with the Industrial Revolution. His work as a poet and artist is usually

understood in the context of his social, political and religious beliefs. He was

not really understood by his peers but much has been written on him by

twentieth-century readers who appreciate the greatness he achieved in his

Gert Strydom English Poetry Download Free

Gert Strydom(03 April 1964)

Gert Strydom was born in 1964 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He matriculated

at Estcourt High School after which he obtained a Bachelor of Business

Administration degree (B.B.A.) at Andrews University (Berrien Springs,

Michigan, U.S.A.) and apart from being a poet and writer he is an accountant by

profession.

He was called up for compulsory national service in the South African defence

force (SADF) for a period of two years during the time of the South African

border / bush war and while following his profession was called up for several

compulsory camps for several months as a member of the South African Citizen’s

force and did partake in the National Colours Parade and in exercise Excalibur.

His predilection for poetry was stimulated by his late father who read Afrikaans

poetry aloud at times, as part of his postgraduate studies at the University of

South Africa. While living in Pretoria he attended the poetry writing school at the

House of Afrikaans Poetry under mentorship of Prof. Ian Raper, where the other

poets especially Ian Raper, Rosa Smit, Mandi Engelbrecht, André (Francois)

Viljoen, Luchie Möller, Karlien van der Merwe and Jan Lourens had a great

influence on the sharpening of his abilities.
